What we collect

What we do not do
- We do not sell your data, and we will not.
- We do not run behavioural advertising.
- We do not share your work with anyone outside the Institute without your say-so.
- We do not put personal data in URLs.
A note on the standard we hold ourselves to
FERPA, the federal student-records law, applies to institutions that receive Department of Education funding. We will not be one, so it does not bind us. We intend to operate at that standard anyway, because it is cheap to do, it is the right way to treat somebody’s education record, and we would rather not have to change our habits later.
Artificial intelligence
Some tutoring and some first-pass marking is done by AI, and we say so rather than hiding it. Every AI action taken against your record is logged with the model and inputs used, so that if you ask why you received a particular mark, we can actually answer.
Written work is reviewed by a human on a sampled basis, and a masterpiece is never judged by a machine.
Who else touches your data
Stripe (payments), our email provider (transactional mail), and our hosting. Each gets the minimum needed to do its job.
Your rights
Ask us for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, ask us to withdraw your Register entry, or ask us to delete your account. Write to hello@cnjames.org. We will not make you jump through hoops.
Adults only
Membership is open to adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a minor has created an account, tell us and we will remove it.
Changes
If we change this policy materially we will say so in advance. Prior versions are kept and dated.
